Picture books offer insight into people of different backgrounds and cultures, which builds empathy and understanding in young readers.  The objective of the We Weave Resource page is to:

  • BUILD CONFIDENT, INDEPENDENT READERS  -  We Weave is created with short sentences filled with easily digestible words to help readers navigate the story. The text is paired with imaginative illustrations to help readers decode unknown words with context and picture clues.

  • MAKE CULTURAL CONNECTIONS - We Weave is a tribe-specific story about a Navajo boy and his grandmother. The story includes attributes and details specific to Navajo people, including weaving and living in a hooghan.

  • BUILD BASIC LITERACY SKILLS – Readers and pre-readers of all ages have the opportunity to practice listening, listening comprehension, speaking, storytelling, predicting, inferring, and more with We Weave. The story lends itself to helping readers master basic story elements, such as characters, setting, and plot.

  • ENHANCE DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP - Digital Citizenship is the responsible use of technology by anyone using computing devices and the Internet to connect with the digital world. Before children access a device, it’s best to address digital literacy and set parameters on use.
